Kalar Hosts Mental Math Competition for Students in Grades 3 and 4
On January 28, 2017, the SABIS Student Life Organization®’s Academic Department at Kalar International School, a SABIS® PPP school in Kurdistan, held a mental math competition for students in grades 3 and 4.
Once they arrived to the competition, the participating students were divided into 8 teams of 7 students each. Then everyone was given instructions by the Math teacher, who went on to ask 10 questions to each group. The questions consisted of addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication as well as ranged from easy to very difficult. The competition was organized by process of elimination, and the last standing team received a certificate for their good effort.
This purpose of this activity was to get students excited about Math. It was a great way to encourage students’ mental math skills in a fun environment. “It was an exciting competition and learned a lot from it. It also improved our mental math skills and was good practice,” said a student.
