Kalar Celebrates International Literacy Day

Students from grades 4 to 6 at Kalar International School, a SABIS® PPP school in Kurdistan, participated in International Literacy Day at school on September 8, 2016.

On this day, students spent their lunch break learning about Literacy, its history, value, and its role in the school. Everyone listened to a presentation on literacy as a human right, a tool of empowerment, and a means for social and human development. In another presentation, students received a better understanding of how schools provide students with the tool of literacy. After the presentations, teachers and students enjoyed a small book exhibition that was put together by some of the students and the teachers.

Creating awareness and concern for literacy is a valuable lesson to give students and encourages them to value their education, as well as work hard at it. The students understood literacy better after the activity and really enjoyed the exhibition. “It was a very important activity and an exciting experiment of opening book exhibition to motivate the students to read more,” said a teacher.
